Lake Iola in Scottsburg looks very much like many municipal lakes upon first glance. However, once one explores its perimeter, one soon finds a wonderful paved trail that winds through a nice upland woods on the east side of Hwy 31. As one continues west the trail takes hikers over I-65. After a short turn to the south from there, one enters a fine wetland woods. The diversity of this city hiking trail is surprising and rewarding. Among common visitors to the lake are a pair of Bald Eagles who have their nesting site at another location, but make Lake Iola a regular hunting spot, especially in winter.
