Freida Graves of Faith Farms in Gary, Indiana, farms organic vegetables and herbs with a fierce love and passion for her community. This photo of Frieda was captured during the NWI Food Council’s “FarmHop”, a series of local farm tours throughout NW Indiana, by attendee Christopher Pupillo on September 23rd, 2017. While Freida is as tender and kind as they come, we love seeing her strength and fortitude shine through in this photograph. The City of Gary has long struggled with deep segregation, poverty and blight, but is experiencing a revival as a result of initiatives like Faith Farms. We want people to recognize folks like Freida who are working to improve Indiana and feed its residents with nourishing food and build resilient communities.
