It was a lucky night to have such a beautiful sunset and so many sandhill cranes. There were hundreds of them bedding down for the night. The bright sun provided a silhouette effect on the descending cranes. The camera was a Nikon D800. I used a 600 mm lens at a shutter speed of 1/1250 seconds at F/8 with ISO of 400 and a tripod with a gimbal head and a remote shutter release added to the stability of the long lens. Goose Pond is a large (about 8000 acres) wildlife refuge and is a stop over for thousands of sandhill cranes and snow geese and ducks during the winter migration.
